The Mystic Underground

The Wanderers EP (CD)

by: Julie Johnson (Jan 2002)

The Mystic Underground is a fairly new synthpop band, but have been making waves in the scene with the first release and soon with their new EP called The Wanderers. The melodies are fresh, and have a nice bouncy sound. I also found the recording to be very clean sounding. There is 1 main vocalist and seems to blend nicely. The first track "The Wanderer's has a nice tempo that was easy to fall into to. It has some nice transitions. One of the things I really liked with this band is how they slowed things down at the end of the song. It just seemed the right thing to do. I also liked how the main vocalist had a nice range in his vocals. I liked how the vocals switched sounds, well what I mean is when the singer has like 2 differnt ranges sang the lyrics lower and then he sang it higher like with "Purple Hearts", and the lyric was like echoed with "Purple Hearts" The next track, "Count to Infinity "(vagabondage mix) was pretty cool. It has even more of a dance track feel. I felt that the programming was strong. I like the part with the lyrics of, "Purple Hearts" and the deep bass beats and the echo effect with the vocals that circled around and around. I like how the singer sang higher pitch at the end with the Wanderers that sort of rang out for a bit. "Winter Acedemy" (real-time mix) seems a little more stripped down and had a slower time feel, but that was ok too. The last track, "It always rains on Wednesday, has more of a DM vocal like feel, but stays true to the bands originality. It is slower, and does not have that more up-tempo dance feel, but that is ok because it shows the bands diverse nature.
