Artist: Nasu Blue CD Title: Fashionably Late (demo) Label: Self-released Reviewer: Matthew Johnson Date: 4/30/06 |
Newly formed duo Nasu Blue's debut demo EP has plenty of atmosphere, but not a whole lot of substance. Each of the three tracks, "Blakamore," "Dirty Thursday," and the intriguingly titled "Slower The Breath of Thee," is more or less comprised of whispering ethereal vocal work, pianos, and a little bit of rock guitar. It's all mellow and dreamy, but there's not enough actual song structure in place to make up for the brevity. If they're going to do the whole ambient pop thing, it'll take more than three songs -- clocking in at under ten minutes altogether -- to really build a mood. If, on the other hand, they're more interested in writing some actual songs, they need to focus less on ambling through soft fuzz and pianos and offer some more memorable melodic hooks.
