Mana ERG- Red Dust

Mana ERG's new 3-song EP starts out plain enough, with some low-key gothic rock guitars, the usual drum machines, and some pop-influenced vocals, which are serious enough for the genre without being all overblown and guttural in the Carl McCoy vein. Things get interesting, though, with the keyboard's burst of metallic New Wave bells, and opening track "The Ditch" really turns delicious when guest vocalist Deborah Roberts kicks in with layers of soprano harmonies. "EA 1729" is similarly blessed by Roberts' presence, with the bridge's ethereal keyboards and her soulful voice in the distance bringing a touch of the theatrical to an otherwise fairly average rock song. Final track "Living Room" is a bit mellower, the guitars more laid back and the electronics doing a lazy sing-song, and you can see why Mana ERG's music has been dubbed "electro-stoner." Not at all a bad disk, and the pop and rock influences mix nicely with the more dance-oriented elements in a way that might appeal to fans of Love And Rockets.
