Moonlight: Week One (9-28-07)

Before I even begin with my review of the new CBS series “Moonlight”, I thought that it would be fitting to mention that during my daily power walk with my dad, we decided to cross through one of our favorites places on our way home---our town’s historic graveyard (1639) where we enjoy sitting down on the encrusted stone bench to drink our green tea, and simply to appreciate what’s around us, as we chitchat about whatever may be on our minds at that very moment. The sky at that point, was well on its way of becoming dark, and as we walked down the well-worn path, I looked up at the sky and in a flash spotted something swoosh by us…. low and behold it was a bat…a bat! Circling and flapping its wings swiftly, gracefully, like a beautiful acrobatic dance. Seeing that bat in the graveyard, on the night that “Moonlight” would soon premiere, made the experience all the more sweet, all the more memorable, all the more special.

Mick St. John is a fox! Well, actually he’s a vampire. Mick became a vampire 60 years ago---a wedding gift from his wife (talk about hiding a real good secret until your wedding night) and he didn’t take to fondly to it. Now divorced (vampires can do that apparently) Mick channels his curse for the greater good by being a private investigator and helping those in need. Mick’s a vampire with morals, a vampire who doesn’t prey upon and kill woman, children or innocents---but those who are bad---very bad, and Mick will use his cunning methods of supernatural strength, speed, and his wickedly wonderful wit to rid L.A. of the putrid scum who slime up the streets.

In week-one we learned a bit of the unusual habits of Mick---he sleeps in a freezer (now that’s a new one for me…sounds like a story to thaw out in a future episode) injecting blood into his veins, a very clever way of getting his “protein” so to speak, and an intriguing and inventive way, too. He has friends in high places…or is that low places? He has a “supplier” for his blood packets at the morgue, and his pal Josef is a vampire too, but he likes to drink the old fashion way---clutching his teeth into sweet and willing flesh. He even compares his lady friend’s blood as a good year…like a bottle of wine, to you and I. Mick can see into the past and snippets of the future. He can be out in the sunlight, but not for too long, because it’ll make him sick. Mick is a silver-tongue, cocky, super-cute and charming…vampire who has kept all of his decent and good human qualities better than some humans can. He’s a first-class gentleman.

Mick’s latest case took him to a murdered co-ed, and to Beth, a reporter for “Buzz Wire" a flashy-trashy news show who’s covering the story. Beth’s catchy headline has the murdered girl being the victim of a vampire…leads her toward a “study group” where the murdered girl’s professor admits to being a real vampire, but not in the traditional dark/gothic sense, but who does craves blood to rejuvenate himself. And working with Mick, who she's pretty sure has met before.

All in all, I really like “Moonlight”; the characters are extremely likable, sexy, engaging, and the look of the show, at times, gave off a kind of “Sin City” feel, which was pretty cool. All I can hope for now is that “Moonlight” doesn’t end up as many of the shows I tend to like (those being the more unique, and out there kind of shows, such as “Freddy's Nightmares”, “Nightmare Café”, “Forever Knight”, “Dark Shadows: Revival”, and “Miracles”) canceled before it even had a chance to fully shine.
