Italy's Latexxx Teens are putting the rock back into industrial rock; their new album combines the heavy grooves of early Marilyn Manson with the sleaze and menace of early Motley Crue. After an intro based around the overture from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the band rocks out with the cutting metal guitars and growled vocals of "(p)Resident Evil" and the angry, blasphemy-fueled diatribe of "Hey God." Though all of the tracks on this album incorporate electronics, they're there to add atmosphere and energy, not to take center stage; at heart, Latexxx Teens are a rock 'n' roll band, and despite the techno undercurrent of songs like "Against," the real emphasis is on glamorously evil attitude and fiery guitar solos. "Maschine Zeit V2.008" has a title that seems designed to attract guest remixes, but it's not the jouncy synthesizers that draw your attention, it's the bombastic guitar solo. If the attitude is pure rock 'n' roll, however, there are more than a few nods to their roots in classic gothic and industrial music, most notably in a powerful cover of Killing Joke's "Millennium" that retains the apocalyptic majesty of the original while fully expressing the signature evil glamor of Latexxx Teens themselves. Old-school industrial rock fans will also enjoy the lush electronic backing to "LSD," a slower offering but nonetheless one of the album's heaviest. Also noteworthy is "Long Way to Ruin," funky mixture of jouncing synths, bass-heavy electronic rhythms, and sneering guest vocals from Victor Love of Dope Stars Inc., who also produced this album. Appealing especially to fans of groups like Murderdolls, Dope, and Powerman 5000, this album combines the aggression of industrial rock with the nonstop party attitude of the heavy metal of Hollywood's Sunset Strip in its heyday.
