Pyhä Kuolema(“Sacred Death”) is the solo project of Finnish neofolk renaissance man Mikko Pöyhönen. Having debuted with the albumSaavun Vaikken Kulkisi two years earlier, the second album Kevättuulisormi (“Spring Wind Finger”) is Pyhä Kuolemas first for Svart Records. Kevättuulisormiwas recorded in Oulu, Finland in June 2013 at Katajan Kaiku Studios by Antti Haapapuro with vintage analog equipment.

Kevättuulisormi brings us melancholic music that seems to be the result of brooding in a cabin through a long Finnish winter. It is neofolk music for the morning after the party, or for a lazy Sunday afternoon in which you feel too lost to accomplish anything at all.

Pyhä Kuolema could be the band that captures the Scandinavian soul better than anything. The best place for them to perform would be a steamy pub that serves beer in raunchy pints. At times, Mikko Pöyhönen sounds like a Nordic bard who survived history and brings us stories that were long forgotten yet still boiling under the skin of his people.

Even though Kevättuulisormi contains many strong tracks, there are a few that deserve a special mention: “Mustat virrat”, for its almost schlager-like chorus which is quite an earworm, and “Irantilaiset lauseet”, a more uptempo, almost happy song, that makes you want to sing along even though you have no idea of the Finnish lyrics.

Overall, if you like folk music and melancholia, you should check out Pyhä Kuolema's Kevättuulisormi.
