Scout Paré-Phillips, one of The Sterling Sisters, has recorded her solo debut album at Pesanta Urfolk with Fields of Ash.
Fields of Ash contains only 2 songs, giving us only five minutes of music. Within those short five minutes, we are carried away by a slew of emotions, dynamics and different atmospheres.
The main focal point of Fields of Ash is the vocal work of Scout Paré-Phillips. She has a large range with many different colors, and shows us how agile her voice is. Even though there are classical tones and flavors in her singing style, her notes never become heavy – they keep on skipping from pitch to pitch in an extraordinarily fluid way.
Behind this layer of enchanting vocals, comes an arrangement of percussion, electronics, and Paré-Phillips' own autoharp and guitar.
If the Internet hadn't shown me that Scout Paré-Phillips is a New Yorker, I would have sworn she is Irish. Her music, her voice, and even her lyrical themes all sound very Irish to me.
Besides being a very gifted singer, Scout Paré-Phillips is also a visual artist. As a result, her debut album has very delicate artwork, and it is wrapped with care and love that is not common for records anymore.
If you want to close you eyes and be carried away by an exceptionally beautiful voice, check out Fields of Ash by Scout Paré-Phillips.
