Lilac Ambush
Breathe Deep Ep (CD)
Twisted Spinach Records
Review by Julie Johnson 4/19/02
Lilac Ambush blends dark wave elements with a tint of industrial to create their interesting dark sound. Lilac Ambush is definitely on a path into the gothic music scene. The vocals heard on the CD rise above the darkness, and are clear sailing. The vocals create a perfect flow over the music. The vocals remind me of the singer from Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry, and Fast Automatic Daffodils. The bass is used to enhance the dark mood, and the guitar has a fuzzy sound to bring spark into the mix of sound. With this sound, you get a good feel of old school gothic music and simple good rock sound. "Breathe Deep" has solid guitar with sonic fusion, and the beginning keyboard create a sinister mood, and a lurking sound. This song brings out a more dark pop sound that people will enjoy. "One Reason" is a track that delivers great gothic and even new wave elements. The bass is thick and builds up. The drumming programming is steady within the song. The guitar distortion is used just right, not over bearing. Lilac Ambush has been a strong EP presence. They are surely to rise among the charts with their dark wave idea.
Lilac Ambush
Earthboard Ep
Twisted Spinach Records
By Julie Johnson
Lilac Ambush creates gothic and industrial elements that will get you up and moving. Earthbound Ep is their first offering. Earthbound the song, is a solid track that has thick layers of bass and sonic guitar that is brilliant. You can hear this sonic guitar throughout all the tracks, and is their signature element. The programming really sticks out, and would be good to dance too during this song. The vocals are smooth and deliver. They remind me of old school gothic vocal styles in the vein of Bauhaus meets Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. The songs take on so many directions like "New Situation" that is upbeat, and has more new wave sounds then gothic sounds. It is not as dark and sonic sounding. Earthbound is probably the strongest track on the Ep, then "Soul Kick" with powerful guitar hooks. Compared to Breathe Deep, you will find that this EP has a different feel, and different where as Breathe Deep has more darker songs, and a different side and sounds, but still keeps their signature sound.
