The Secret Confession, a new act in the atmospheric electro scene, based around Tabitha Gray and Jerry Barksdale, have released their debut EP A Loss Of Innocence. This demo EP contains 5 tracks, and gives us 16 minutes of music.

Somewhere on the intersection between chilled-out electronica, gothic creepiness and industrial sound effects lies the soundscape of The Secret Confession. The songs are spun out, slow pictures of dreadful parts of our lives. Or, in their own words: “Blending earthy and angst filled tones with sharp electronics and laid back beats to create a unique and organic audio experience.”

The musicians of The Secret Confession are not new to the scene. They have shared the stage with such notable acts as: Attrition, Bella Morte, The Birthday Massacre, Cage The Elephant, Combichrist, Das Ich, Every Time I Die, Genitortures, Iced Earth, Icon of Coil, Lordi, Nocturn, Slick Idiot, Thrill Kill Kult, Trivium, Type O Negative, Wednesday 13 and many others.

Within their subgenre, The Secret Confession are certainly doing a good job. Unfortunately, the niche they have crafted for themselves does not seem to give them a lot of room to move. As a result, A Loss Of Innocence seems to repeat itself constantly throughout the demo EP. The vocals are a bit monotonous as well, even though Tabitha Gray has a pleasant voice that seems to have more in store than what we hear on A Loss Of Innocence. The vocals remind me a bit of Darkwell.

More than anything, The Secret Confession seem to bring us a slow and creepy type of dark electro that could as well be gothic ambient. The lyrics are not a strength of The Secret Confession, and seem to mostly dwell upon cliches we've heard too often in the genre.

Overall, A Loss Of Innocence gives us a glimpse of The Secret Confession, a new act in the dark electro scene. Hopefully, in the future Gray and Barksdale will allow for a little more experimentation in their soundscapes. Until now, I can say that A Loss Of Innocence gave me a pleasant listening experience, albeit a rather blurred one in which sounds and effects often repeat themselves throughout the record.
