It was completely by accident that I stumbled across Ten Cent Toys and am really happy I did. I got a copy of the album and didn’t really know what to expect. I usually find that with a first album it is either dire or full of good ideas but needing finishing correctly. I was amazed to find neither was the case for Ten Cent Toys debut album. It is a great sounding album that you would expect millions would have been spent perfecting it.
When you start listening to the album you are met with some dark wave cyber and light industrial tones of The Art Of Storytelling in which David’s vocal fit perfect to the amazing words he has created. As you venture further in you are met with a mixture of emotion and eroticism served up on an industrial music platter. You get songs like : "Because It Feels So Good" and "The Climax" which are orgasmic industrial masterpieces in their own right.
Ten Cent Toys manage to grab so far into the human psyche pulling out the melting pot of all that we are and play with some of the darker sides. The song "Kiss And Tell" is purely that, when you first start hearing the song you are met with haunting melodic beats and then David’s vocals kick into a story of two people delving into an explosive sexual relationship to reignite the passion again. It’s my favorite track off the album and when I had the pleasure of interviewing Ten Cent Toys I just had to ask what the ideas behind "Kiss And Tell" and was told that it was written from the mindset of two people who couldn't tell anyone what they were doing with each other. That sense of wanting and needing but never getting to claim it. Wanting to tease and wanting to please is in human nature. We want and when we can't have, we only want it more. So, we as humans turn it into a game of Kiss And Tell.
All in all there is a lot more to Ten Cent Toys debut album than you would expect. It’s a finely tuned dark wave industrial masterpiece and is well worth a listen to. Ten Cent Toys have put a huge amount of work into this album and it shows.
Keep an eye open for Ten Cent Toys, something tells me these guys are going to get a large following of fans and become big players on the alternative music scene. 9/10.
