The Birthday Massacre’s “Pins and Needles” is the band’s fourth full-length album on Metropolis. There’s no great surprises here, The Birthday Massacre continues to write in a comfortable place: with chugging guitars, soaring vocals and atmospheric synths. The album features eleven tracks which are sure to please those who like TBM’s melodic mix of electronica and rock. The album opens with the crunchy, groove-laden track, “In the Dark.” “Pale” goes into softer territory and is most notable for its well-crafted vocal harmonies. However, the song slows the pace from some of the album’s other songs. “Control” is more upbeat, and includes some rare vocoded vocals. “Midnight” has a typically big chorus, and orchestral-like touches. The title track is another groove-heavy track, with a poppy, memorable chorus. The chorus has some interesting new-wave synth touches on it. “Sleepwalking” ratchets up the guitars between verses, until it hits the chorus. For fans of electronic rock, The Birthday Massacre is in fine form on “Pins and Needles.” The mix of rock and electronica on “Pins and Needles” is familiar territory, but that may be a bit of the album’s appeal. It’s a solid album even if some of the songs seem somewhat formulaic, somewhat predictable. Buy the CD here:
