Artist: C-Drone-Defect CD Title: Dystopia Label: Noitekk Reviewer: Robert Eaton Date: 2-09-10
C-Drone Defect is the harsh-electro project of Marc Horstmeier. “Dystopia” is the follow-up to 2004’s “Nemesis,” and C-Drone’s second release with the Noitekk/Black Rain label. Some of the songs (and many remixes) were released as a free download E.P., (“Letters from Dystopia”). Despite the five-year silence of C-Drone Defect, “Dystopia” proves worth the wait. The album is full of dark-electronic soundscapes and hypnotic beats. The album’s opener “Rebellis” opens with a soundscape of a storm and falling rain, then morphs into an uncompromisingly dark, slow and hymn-like anthem. “Morituri Te Salutant” is one of the albums most infectious songs. The piece is marked by striking choral flourishes and catchy, heavily vocoded verses. “Mente Videbor” is heavy with crushing guitar riffs and symphonic touches. “Tempus Fugit” is carried by a haunting piano melody that goes in and out through the song. “Lex Talionis” is an epic-sounding instrumental piece complete with piano interludes. There really aren’t any songs on this album that are throwaways. “Dystopia” assures C-Drone Defect’s place as a band to know for those in the know. “Dystopia” sits easily among the best albums being produced in the genre. If you’re not familiar with C-Drone Defect, “Dystopia” gives you ten good reasons to familiarize yourself with this project. Check out the band: https://www.myspace.com/cdronedefect |
