Futurepop mainstays Rotersand return with their follow up to 2007’s “1023”. The album, “Random is Resistance” is twelve-tracks of techno-influenced industrial pop with an impeccable melodic sensibility and undulating synth-lines. Thematically, the album imagines a future where control is maintained through the control of information. The album’s songs are slickly produced, occasionally menacing, and always danceable. Some of the songs may seem very familiar synthpop territory, with occasional pleasant surprises. Speaking of surprises, “Random is Resistance” opens with a really strange Pink Floyd-esque acoustic track “Yes We Care.” The song is a somewhat startling introduction to the album, but a fantastic interpretation of its source material. “Bastards Screaming” is a bouncing, stompy electro song, and probably one of the album’s highlights. “Waiting to Be Born” pretty straightforward synthpop. Catchy, but we’ve heard this before. “War on Error” is another album highlight, with a bassy groove and inventive programming. For fans of Futurepop, Rotersand is about at good as it gets. It’s not that there aren’t great songs on this album, just that there’s not enough great songs. Still, Rotersand will no doubt place in the alternative dance charts as well as make it’s way onto DJ playlists. Unfortunately, the album seems a little more than a vehicle for the few really good songs on the album, rather than a work as a whole.
