The Danish electronic act Neotek had an underground hit with 1995’s “Brian Over Muscle.” However, not much has been heard from the band since, until recently. Neotek re-released “Brian Over Muscle” and began playing live with a core of members: Jacob Neis, Henrik Jensen, and Jens B. Petersen as well as guest performers. Aside 2005’s 9 song E.P. “Mind over Matter,” “Sex, Murder, & Rock ‘n Roll” is Neotek’s first album in more than a decade, and it seems that that wait has been worth it for fans of aggressive and intelligent electronic music like Front 242. The album is surprisingly diverse, it opens with “My Shiny 44,” which is oddly reminiscent of a George Thorogood song with its spoken narrative and hapless narrator. “My Shiney 44” menaces and then explodes ino a fantastic electronic chorus. Songs like “Failure” mix a stompy, aggressive industrial with a melodic sensibility which owes greatly to Depeche Mode. It will make a great dance track, and the melody will stay with the listener long after the song ends. On almost the opposite end of the spectrum, “Revolver” is a floor-stomper that has few contemporary peers. The sound of “Sex, Murder and Rock ‘n Roll” manages to be both fresh and sound familiar to fans of 1990’s era electro/industrial. While an album like this is likely to have limited appeal to late-coming fans of the slicker ebm and electro of today, this is a strong album and should not be overlooked. This album shows that despite its long hiatus, Neotek can still be a force in the scene.
