Their press releases compare the Peoples to OMD and the Beach Boys, but a better comparison might be the Legendary Pink Dots, given the two bands’ fondness for psychedelically inspired synthesizers and strangely perky melancholy. Though the Peoples do combine a sort of ‘80s-inspired dance vibe with harmonious vocals, they have a certain weirdness that no amount of catchy handclaps or dance beats can quite conceal. There’s also a kind of ‘60s or ‘70s psychedelic feel to their music that’s actually too historic to be seized upon by the current breed of hipsters – more vintage cool than retro trendiness – evidenced by the tinny organs of “You Won’t Take the Fall” and the jazzy, stony randomness of “The Sound of the Sun.” Although “Circle of Disguise” has all the historic appeal of an early ‘80s mainstream dance hit, it’s the wonderful moodiness of “In the House at Night” or the hallucinogenic sing-along of “The Spells You Make” that really showcase this band’s talent. “Realize Your Soul” is also worth a listen – with its sorrowful harmonica and college rock pathos, it might even appeal to the hipster crowd. Lighthearted at first listen but full of hidden depths, the Peoples worm their way into your head with deceptively sweet melodies, but the catchy harmonies bely a complexity sure to intrigue even the pickiest of music snobs.
