All I Ever Wanted is the debut LP from Charlottesville, VA Synth-Rock act, Oh So. Featuring former In Tenebris members, Jdavyd Williams and Bruce Stocking, Oh So has set out to explore the human experience in their music, and ultimately blur the line between the listener and performer. All I Ever Wanted succeeds in this mission with its deeply emotional lyrics and fusion of Post-Punk rock with Synthpop elements.
Oh So's sound is reminscent of acts like The Last Dance, Ikon, and The Cruxshadows. Drum Machines with haunting guitars and rather dancy synth loops. Stand out tracks include Never, Temptation Floor and Torment which was featured on Radio-Active Music's 2010 sampler. DJ's who want to slip a bit more Goth Rock in their synth heavy nights will find All I Ever Wanted a welcome addition to their collection. The Synthpop elements dominate songs like Temptation Floor, but don't skimp on Goth Rock guitars and vocals, so easy transitions into less oontz driven bands are possible. This reviewer's only gripe with the album is the track Straight Line Winds. Its an instrumental consisting of guitar distortion for about 6 minutes. While it would be a great closing piece the CD, it is actually track 7 on the album. Its placement in the middle of the album feels more like its an interruption than a bridge between a high energy song and a low energy song. While an instrumental track is always nice on Electro-Goth releases for some variety, it would have helped if there had been some instrumentation in it.
In closing, Oh So, has presented a very strong debut effort. All I Ever Wanted is an enjoyable album of Synth Rock with a lot of Gothic Rock influences, making it perfect for club play and for casual listening. This reviewer looks forward to future releases, minus the monotonous instrumentals that is.
