ARTIST: Jonteknik ALBUM: Intuitive Scientists EP LABEL: Self-released REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 9-10-08 A five-track sampler of Jonteknik's newer material as well as a classic track or two, this EP tends toward the electro side of the UK producer's offerings, which generally range from vintage house and techno to instrumental synthpop. The one exception is "Machine," a funky house number that not only feels a little out of place with the rest of the songs, but also feels somewhat unfinished, the synthesized choir effects and snapping reverb-drenched beat never quite coming together with the other strings of loops. On the other hand, the electro material is faultless. "Radio Station" is classic electro, all sci-fi synth patterns and bits of robotic voices, while "I Could Have Been Warped" moves into moodier territory with tense keyboard sequences hovering ominously over the pulsing breakbeat. "Forever Electric" is richer, more cinematic, with more treatment of the drum patches giving it a much fuller sound, while "Forever Endeavour" finishes the EP by gently floating away on pleasantly light keyboard patterns. A mostly solid sampler likely to appeal to both techno and synthpop fans, this EP is nonetheless overshadowed somewhat by Jonteknik's recently released Tones from Home (1995-1999), a 12-song retrospective that makes for a better starting place for new fans. Pick that up first, and if you like it (as you're quite likely to do), come back for this one. Visit Jonteknik online at www.jonteknik.com. |
