The music of ZDefekt, a collective of musicians that includes members of such projects as Syphilis Sauna, Mortii, Euphondisson and Harmonxcape, resembles nothing so much as the studio material of the lamentably defunct Crash Worship ADRV. This seems unexpected; at first glance, one wouldn’t immediately connect Crash Worship ADRV’s themes of dark Mesoamerican sorcery with the Polish serial killer vibe ZDefekt seem to be going for, but these are cosmetic differences. Each band is loud, brutal and primal, with a sound based on throbbing ritual drums and lots of electronic noise, not to mention guitars and basses run through enough distortion to make them sound far more evil than any stringed instrument has the right to be. ZDefekt is more rock-oriented, however, even incorporating acoustic guitar on “Kurcze Stac Na Czele.” “Naprawo Od Przed Bogiem Przeklinal Autobus” focuses more on strummed chords than the industrial drum rhythms, though everything is still couched in an obscene amount of feedback. ZDefekt’s work is also a bit less frantic than similar artists; the 20-minute epic “Krajanie Rodzenie” is comparatively subdued even when the tape loops and muffled drumbeats kick in. They’re certainly not above using the abrasive tactics of extreme noise to get the point across, however; the central sound effect of “Zero Defekt (Molting)” resembles nothing so much as a dentist’s drill, and is about as soothing. This is all pretty inaccessible stuff, and deliberately so, but fans of early industrial noise like Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten’s more chaotic work should enjoy this one.
