I was first introduced to Necro Facility by the BORN//EVOLVE//PROCESS Compilation, which had the single Tuxedo on it. Tuxedo, from 2007's The Room, was such an amazing throwback to Skinny Puppy with a new style twist that I immediately bought The Black Painting (2005), and The Room. Necro Facility has a nice range of experimental electronics with that old school feel to them, which made them really popular with Skinny Puppy fans everywhere.

2011 brings their third full length studio album with Progress Productions Wintermute. When I first heard the samples of the songs on Wintermute, I was a little nervous. There area a lot of elements in the new album that are not very characteristic of Necro Facility. A lot more singing, and guitar driven pop songs – in the industrial sense of the term pop, of course. I can understand not wanting to be called “that band that sounds like Skinny Puppy,” because that will always follow you and you will more than lively never shake that impression on people. However, I do believe there is something to be said about completely changing your style, which seems to be very popular now days.

Wintermute, despite the drastic change, does have a very unique sound to it still, and for that, it is definitely note worthy. Spending some time with label mates Covenant has had some effect on their sound indefinitely. This album will bring out a lot of fans that previously had not heard Necro Facility. I would recommend it for fans of 16 Volt, Angelspit, Birthday Massacre, and Skinny Puppy.
