Artist: Malfaktor CD Title: The Delay of the Inevitable Label: Unsigned Reviewer: Robert Eaton Date: 5-8-10
Malfaktor is an industrial metal project based in Los Angeles and Orange Co., Ca. “The Delay of the Inevitable” is the band’s first full-length album. The band has had a bit of a revolving lineup, but has solidified that lineup is currently working on a follow-up disk. “The Delay of the Inevitable” draws its sludgy guitars from metal, but also, compares, at it’s best, to noise acts like ATR and Schizoid. Unlike those bands, Malfaktor often lacks their frenetic pace. The album features a mass of distorted guitars and vocals, but is not consistent. The track “Dirty Faith” is intense and hits in the gut. “The Resistance” keeps up the pace and is another strong track. “Memoirs of a Dead Man” is a slows the pace, and lacks any development. The guitars drown out the programming as well. “One by One” recovers some of the album’s momentum, finding a balance between guitars and synths in the mix. “The Dethroner,” at almost nine minutes, is dark, grinding track. The album bogs down slightly in the slower tracks later in the album. “Sarcophagus” features a much more danceable electronic beat, and is a good break from the down-tempo songs. In the end, Malfaktor’s sludgy guitars don’t often hit with the intensity they should. The album sounds a bit under-produced. This album should have been an E.P. of it’s best songs, and there are good songs here. As an album, however, it leaves a lot to be desired. Check out the band: www.myspace.com/malfaktor |
