ARTIST: Stiff Donut ALBUM: Once You Go Chocolate You Never Go Back LABEL: Self-released REVIEWER: Matthew J. DATE: 9-12-09 Starting off as a Limp Bizkit parody, Stiff Donut has gone on to become a prolific purveyor of industrial rock comedy, and musically speaking, there's little on this release to distinguish it from its predecessors. The lyrics, on the other hand, take a bit of a surprise turn; while there's still plenty of juvenile humor, as exemplified by Hollywood diet parody "Circumcision Sandwich" or the ode to Donald Trump's hair, "A Wooly Mammoth's Asshole," this EP also takes several more serious turns. "Criminals in Blue" is an anti-cop anthem, albeit one delivered in Stiff Donut creator Mike Hymson's trademark snottiness, but "Fucking Retarded" is particularly interesting because it starts out seemingly as a potshot at people with developmental disabilities but somewhere along the line becomes a surprisingly thoughtful and righteously angry assault on capitalism's exploitation of those least capable of protecting themselves from it. It's hardly the kind of social commentary you'd expect from someone who writes songs like "Be Extra Gentle When You Go Muffdiving," and it'll probably go over the heads of Stiff Donut's usual audience, but it goes to show that even the most overtly, intentionally stupid music occasionally makes some salient points.
