Asy9 seems to be the perfect example of a “hidden jewel.” The Singles Collection is an excellent, comprehensive collection that spans from past albums, and also includes tracks from the upcoming release Forlorn. Many fans say that Eve Alacu (vocals, fx) brilliantly picks up where the Kidneythieves left off, serving us a varied plate of industrial, electro, and lush soundscapes.

Starting things off with songs from Forlorn, “Open” and “Something Up My Sleeve,” with a really great rock type riff, but the thing with most of her songs, is that she sings in an almost subdued style. My highlight track would have to be the hypnotic “Heroine.” Eve’s vocals are clear and free of any distractions. It’s an ambient, atmospheric piece, and I think it really sets Asy9 apart from a lot of what’s currently being marketed out there. Also to be found on this (or any Asy9) CD, are dance-y type club tracks, emotional rock-oriented tracks, and basically anything else you can imagine. The different albums and types of songs are evenly distributed, which definitely adds to the value of the record itself.

The intensity and sound is often held back, and then released, like a teasing lover. The straightforward and gutsy lyrics match the vocals in every way, and the production and mixing is seamless. This record is a great taste for anyone who is looking for a refreshing and addictive sound. Does the sound and style bring back fond memories of the Kidneythieves? Well, yes, but I think it’s also fair to say that Asy9 takes it a few steps further, and creates a sexy, sensual world that literally draws you in within seconds. Current fans will enjoy this release, and new initiates will likely find this as an excellent taste of what is to come.
