Fuoco Fatuo, from Italy, have released their first full CD The Viper Slithers in the Ashes of What Remains, after 2 EPs and countless gigs as support band for Abysmal Grief, Necros Christos, Evoken and many more.
Fuoco Fatuo are described as an ultra-doom band, as well as as Italy's darkest and heaviest power trio. Dark and heavy they are, although their music comes across as sluggish by moments.
The Viper Slithers in the Ashes of What Remains contains 5 tracks, good for 54 minutes of music full of heaviness, anxiety and doom. With their music, and the artwork on the cover, Fuoco Fatuo seem to want to drag the listener into the abyss of his/her soul and invoke a deep todessehnsuch in him/her. Well, that is possible, but the slow and sluggish tracks might as well softly lure you into sleep.
At their best moments, Fuoco Fatuo sound like a witch-house version of Slayer's “Roots, Bloody Roots”. One of the highlights of the album is “Inner Isolation in a Sea of Mist”, which reminds me of Primordial, yet less innovative and creative.
Overall, Fuoco Fatuo seems to be missing their goal on The Viper Slithers in the Ashes of What Remains: the album leaves me more bored than suicidal.
