From the underbelly of the Canadian black metal scene comes Neige Eternelle with their self-titled debut. As most of the black metal bands from Quebec, Neige Eternelle are using French lyrics, and a vintage black metal sound.

While some of the bands from the Quebec black metal scene are exceptionally rich in emotion, combining the French-romantic poetry and soulful melancholy with the raw emotion of black metal, the vast majority just sound like someone throwing up over a blur of mediocre guitar riffs, blunt-sounding drums and uninspired bass lines. And unfortunately, Neige Eternelle, fall in the latter category.

Granted, Neige Eternelle bring a few funny hoompah-rhythms (for example in “Fier Patriote”) in their old-school black metal, but the overall idea is that their music just sounds too familiar, and that there is nothing new in this release. Frostbitten and kvlt soundscapes, yes – but leave that to the Norwegians.

So to wrap this all up: unless you collect every obscure black metal recording out there, you can simply pass by Neige Eternelle. Nothing new in there.
