Preachers of the Night is the 5th album by German power metal band Powerwolf. If you thought power metal died in the 2000s, then rejoice – Powerwolf are here with all the traditional booming epic elements of good ole bombastic power metal.
While the extremely high-pitched vocals of, for example, Stratovarius are replaced by a ballsier sound (with a high screech here and there, of course), all other elements of melodic power metal are safeguarded. There are the melodic keyboard lines, layered vocals and double bass drums that push the music forwards.
Preachers of the Night is filled with catchy tracks, and as such, Powerwolf remind me of Sabaton. Different approach, different lyrical style, but the same readiness to conquer hordes of fans in one haul.
While in general the speed on the album is high and all tracks are earworms superdeluxe, two tracks stand out: “Coleus Sanctus”, for its catchiness that is reminiscent of Blind Guardian in the mid-2000s, and the powerhouse “In The Name Of God (Deus Vult)”, with its dark flair. As the track titles suggest, religious elements are a red line through the lyrics of Powerwolf.
To sum it all up: if double bass drums make you happy, then wait no longer and get yourself a copy of Preachers of the Night by Powerwolf. And who exactly said that power metal is dead?
