High Priest of Saturn, a trio from Trondheim, Norway, have released their debut album High Priest of Saturn. This album contains four epic tracks, all over 9 minutes in length.

High Priest of Saturn takes you on a psychedelic trip that is drenched in melancholia and nostalgia. Unlike most psychedelic and sixties-revival bands, this trio creates a distorted type of trip, with a slower, stretched-out and darker vibe – truly revealing the “doom” influence of their music.

A similar band on the same label (Svart Records) is Jess And The Ancient Ones, so a comparison looms around the corner. Both bands use female vocals, but where Jess And The Ancient Ones are melodic and more tune-oriented, High Priest of Saturn are more aiming at creating a distorted universe of sluggish bass tunes and eerie vocals in which you and your ears can get lost.

The work of High Priest of Saturn is experimental, original and certainly interesting. They sound as how you would perceive reality when air is replaced by oil. Slightly reminiscent of the work of syruphead DJs, yet covered in the typical weltschmerz of doom metal, and then loaded with groovy psychedelic guitar solos – High Priest of Saturn is quite a trip. Their use of the organ is certainly worth a special mention too.

The four tracks on the album seamlessly slide into one another, creating a vast soundscape in which no north nor south, beginning nor end can be distinguished.

High Priest of Saturn is an album to experience: dim the lights, close your eyes, lean back and give in to the dark, trippy, gloomy atmosphere.
