Deathchain, a Finnish death metal band, have released their sixth album Ritual Death Metal. With all that “death” in their titles, Deathchain might come across as too kvlt to be cool, but their death metal is fierce as hell.
Ritual Death Metal draws its lyrical themes from the Mesopotamian pandemonium, and Deathchain use their lyrics to “map their inner beings to find the Lightbringer.” The result is an album that explores the limits of death metal, with sluggish doom infused here and extreme black metal anger there.
Many death metal bands find a trick that works for them, stick to it, and sometimes release albums that sound very much the same throughout. Deathchain deliver the absolute opposite, and morph from track to track on Ritual Death Metal. This is some of the most creative death metal I've heard in the past years.
One of the highlights of Ritual Death Metal is “Like Worms Upon The Lands”, which also features vocals by LG Petrov from Entombed, a brutal, fierce and extreme in-your-face kinda metal tracks.
The more delicate “Our Lady Under The Earth” uses female backing vocals and invokes Tiamat in the days of The Astral Sleep and Clouds.
“Tiamat's Eyes of Death” are sophisticated death metal, that, at its best moments, sounds reminiscent of At The Gates.
To all lovers of death metal, check out Deathchain and their creative explorations of the genre!
