Yurei, the one-man progressive project of Bjeima, has released a second album Night Vision – and it's a nightmare. Not in a sense that it is a bad album, but the album sounds like a scary nightmare that grabs you by the throat and wakes you up screaming and sweating.

Night Vision is a grotesque soundscape of depressed clowns, jazzy chords, suicidal Dali-esque figures and the odd mosquito that bugs you deep into the night. Listening to Yurei is an adventure, a bad psychedelic trip and at times it is downright scary.

While the songwriting is of great quality, the album does require a certain mood for listening to it. All the dark energy that creeps out of the chords and distorted vocals can simply eat at your soul. Don't listen to this right before you go to sleep!

The opening track, the glorious “Insomniac Bug Hunt” is in a sense still light and funny – but it is the portal of the hellish ride you are about to experience.

Rushed chords, fast drums and a sense of chaos and stress are the main elements of “Reborn in Reveries”, a major contrast to the next track, the creepy and horror-like “3.00 a.m. Revolt”.

The Cognitive Crack” and “Diminished Disciple” venture into the progressive dark jazzy metal without distorted guitars, after which “Sleepwalkers in Love” bring a burlesque feeling to it – a bit like Voltaire, but without the tongue-in-cheek humor and with a chopped-off pig-head on a stick.

The most intense track of Night Visions could be “Dali By Night” - something you simply should try to experience.

Ditt Monument” and “Machinery” tap into more classic prog metal. The final track “Cranial Echoes” is the final narrative of the nightmare, with spoken word vocals and chords that refer to both Anne Clark and Opeth.

Yurei's Night Vision is not for the faint at heart. It consists of deeply unsettling soundscapes that creep into your mind like a bad nightmare. Listen to it, if you dare.
