Artist: Blackthorn CD Title: Gossamer Witchcraft Label: Ravenheart Music Records Reviewer: Rhys Stevenson Date: 5-31-10 Russian symphonic gothic metal quintet Blackthorn concoct a witches magic potion and spills it all over the gothic metal scene with their fluid and free-flowing symphonic crafted opus ‘Gossamer Witchcraft’, for the record ‘gossamer’ is the common name for ‘spider silk’. Russia, well known for its huge Goth scene, and treasure trove of metal acts: T.H.E Sacrament, T3R, Arkona, Harza, etc. Have now got a new piece of gold that is priceless, sensational melodies encrypted within the heavenly female vocals are supplemented by the speedy drumming compositions and are backed up by soul-soothing synthesizers and guitars. This may as well be Russia’s answer to The Netherlands ‘Within Temptation’. The Russian quintet delivers its listeners and fans a treat, a whole melancholic yet highly orchestral, symphonic and atmospheric musical storm, a sort of soundtrack that would feature ‘phantom of the opera’ as its premier choice, that is what this band deliver, opera metal in the form of symphonic gothic metal and is surely to be noticed in the Russian metal scene as well as the gothic metal music scene. Prepare to be cut by the Blackthorn… https://www.myspace.com/blackthornian 10/10 Rhys Stevenson |
