ARTIST: NoXiOus Corp CD TITLE: Grey Shades EP LABEL:Toxic Forest Records REVIEWER: Peter Cooper DATE : 01-11-10
After listening to NoXiOuS Corp's Grey Shades EP, I was pleasantly suprised for the most part. "I Hate The World" had some serious Dream Theater references (nonconventional arrangements, synthesizers ect). I liked the fact that they are trying to alternate between clean/light/operatic vocals and a growling angry style. However, the cookie monster/death metal growls in metal vocals is old hat. It is still possible to utter intelligible lyrics with a hard growling style. I love death metal, but would enjoy death metal ten times more if I could clearly hear how one wants to kill as he cums for example; but again, I really applaud that they are trying something a little different. Brilliant guitar playing in "Screaming Silently" especially the sweep picking as well as nice band dynamics. "Grey Shades" was a pleasure to listen to as it was the most guitar driven of the lot and produced as such. The drumming on everything was tight like a machine gun and the bass was locked right in. NoXiOuS Corp. is a band worth more attention. I loved that the production did not overemphasize the synths. They were utilized for ambience as they should be. 4/5 stars.
