Obszön Geschöpf’s Remzi Kellici has really matured as an artist by abandoning all pretense of seriousness and putting out an album that’s joyfully dark and obscene. With this first release on his own Mortuary Records label, Kellici quits imitating Suicide Commando and puts out a hard-hitting CD full of references to horror, necrophilia and sadomasochism. With song titles like “Sex In the Crypt” and “Rapist of Remains,” it’s not hard to figure out where he’s going with this, but just to make things extra clear, Kellici loads each track with tons of obscure samples, ranging from vintage horror films to porno movies to more recent slasher epics like Rob Zombie’s “House of 1000 Corpses.” The horror aesthetic also creeps into the instrumentation; several songs utilize perkily spooky bell effects, while “The Beast Within” incorporates something that sounds like an overdriven theremin in a nod to old black and white science fiction. There’s not as much music variety as there could be, with each song pretty much coming straight out of the harsh EBM mold, but the fact that Kellici has finally found his own sound makes this a forgivable sin. The first unabashedly fun thing to come from this French artist, this album should be a treat to fans of splatter movies and hard dance music. Think “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” by way of early Front Line Assembly, and make sure you wear your latex duds to dance to this; that way you can just hose off all the blood.
