The Angels Dance Upwards EP is the debut release of Georgia’s Unavox. Unavox is Reid Rainwater (keys/engineering), Meggan Cooper (vocals/bass/keys), Steve Fogle (guitar), and Michael (vocals). To begin, I’d like to say that listening to Unavox is like a blast from the past for me.

Their sound is consistent of everything I loved about the early 90’s goth-industrial scene. Michael’s vocals are reminiscent of Crash A/D mixed with Jerusalem Syndrome. I can’t exactly place the female vocals but she sounds perfectly fit for an early Cleopatra compilation. Both of vocalists do, actually.

That description may have put up red flags for some, but the music and sound of the Angels Dance Upwards EP is by no means outdated. The synths and programming are catchy and complex enough to hold up in a modern playlist, the structure enticing and smart.

Unavox’s Angels Dance Upwards EP is a rare treat--an instantly enjoyable mixture of both old and newschool EBM. Songs like “RITR,” “War of Attrition,” and the title track seem destined to find a home in clubs; but also show enough good taste to be complex and listenable beyond the common 4x4 pitfalls of so many current bands.
