Cynical Existence, one of the harsher acts in the EBM-scene, have released their latest album Erase, evolve and rebuild.

Cynical Existence is a project of Fredrik Croona from Sweden. Even if on Erase, evolve and rebuild, Croonareveals a more open and diversified songwriting, we quickly recognize the familiar raw, harsh, dark and dirty elements which characterize the style of Cynical Existence. On Erase, evolve and rebuild, the big club hit is “Erase Me”, the second track of the album, and oddly enough, one that I did not point out as the biggest possible hit from the album.

As the label, Alfa Matrix puts it: “Fans of ravaging EBM with dominant harsh vocals and loud sinister synths will definitely enjoy the forceful beats and adrenaline-pumping elektro sequences of this new album. Struggle, debauchery, decay, imperfection, regret, paranoia... so many dark themes come to fruition on this full length album and perfectly fit the "Fuck the sick and dirty soulless generation" feel of these 14 new songs!“

To me, the album mostly sounds as a straightforward attack fueled by harsh industrial vocals and club-ready beats and electronic sounds. While the style of the album is defined by these elements, there is some diversity in the album, with elements from popular culture woven through it. Overall, however, the album is one of the weaker released on Alfa Matrix that I have heard recently.

The most interesting tracks on Erase, evolve and rebuild are “My decadence your sins” with its dubstep influences, “Imperfect” with its great dance beat, and “Sins of your flesh”, for the early Blutengel references in the track.

Overall: Erase, Evolve and Rebuild by Cynical Existence is a solid harsh EBM album, but it's style is rather narrow, so that listening to the full 57 minutes of the album quickly feels like a chore.
