MiXE1 is the solo project of UK based Mike Evans, and this is the debut release "Module 01" featuring 3 brand new tracks of Electronic rock, based around an interesting concept...

"The songs are loosely based around a futuristic city like the one shown in the EP cover art - this comes through in the sounds of the songs and sometimes the lyrics noting the scenery around them" Mike Evans - MiXE1

The first thing that will strike you about this EP is the quality of Mike's vocal work, which is very Evocative and distinctive, and whilst there are other prominent parts to the songs, the strength of his vocals are what underpins the whole EP.

Thats not to understate some of beautifully layered synth and guitar work, which create walls of elegant noise from which MiXE1 can launch their soaring hooks.

But without a doubt, it is the vocals that stand this apart from the pack, with delicate tones cutting through the mix perfectly, and managing to maintain their power without distortion or screaming, just using a little auto tune to help create the synthetic vocal tone that fits so well amongst the tracks.

Each of these tracks have their own charm, with "Breathe" coming in with a very sci fi vibe, with gentle pads building to a massive end section where clever layering of different vocal parts provides a euphoric finish.

This is then followed by the rockier "You Saved My Life" which sees MiXE1 crack out the buzzsaw guitars and some Celldweller-esque vocal effects that add a nice variation to the intensity of the track, and show a more aggressive side to this young artist.

Finally, we come to "Waking Up Angels" which is an epic, reverb-heavy finale, with slows the pace, and replacing energy with emotion.

My only criticism would be that the production at times isn't perfect, and there may be one or two instances of clipping, but these are too few and too brief to really impact on the listener, and in some ways actually adds to the emotional nature of the songs.

I have very much enjoyed this EP and will be encouraging MiXE1 to get a move on and record a full album, as I am excited what a full length release would have to offer.

Ultimately, this EP is definitely worth a listen, and at less than £3 to download from FIXT, there is no real reason not to give it a try.

8/10 - Suggested Tracks - All of them
