Uranium Orchid - Premonition (promo)

A Chinaman interested in the less usual side of life & a dominatrix lost in an unusual underworld in America. Sound interesting? Baton Rouge, Louisiana's Uranium Orchid show exactly how magical such a pairing can be with the release of their new album, "Premonition". A highly produced combination of impeccably-glossed techno, pop and trance based electonica. The song list is very strong, and both the production and sound are magnificent.

The first thing one notices about Premonition is the electronic aspect of the album. This sound is more structurally realized than most of the electronica acts of the last few years, and it really shows that Jacquie-Oh! (vocals), and Dr. Hu? (composing, programming) have finally found a happy medium to their musical collaboration. After struggling for years to soildify their style, Uranium Orchid has done exactly that. To the nth degree...

Sensual vocals that seem to be lighter than air, rather than the traditional low-octave rasp most female singers use, creating an aural atmosphere that is not evident with similar artists. Jacquie-Oh!'s tormented lyrics and beautiful voice compliment the extraordinary monolithic beats and sequencing of Dr. Hu?, easily one of the smartest architectural producers in recent electronic music. The mix of sweet & low melodies, sophisticated dynamics, clever samples and lush, layered, soundscapes all contribute to the success of Premonition.

One of the best tracks on the album is "Fairytale". An excellent cut that packs power, enthusiasm and sex appeal into a radio friendly package. Jacquie-Oh! and Dr. Hu? seem to be flaunting the darker side of their psyches with the seductive and hypnotizing lyrics and background vocals. The title track, "Premonition" is the most electronic of the songs on the EP, featuring a cant-be-ignored tempo, definitive programming, and is filled with a whispery background vocal track that adds to its overall power. A great song.

Uranium Orchid is a great effort from one of the most talented, intelligently produced groups on the electronic/dance music scene today. And Premonition is in my opinion, a contender for the best electronic CD of 2004. It is a worthy addition for any music collection.

This is the Uranium Orchid . A beautiful sound for a dying world...
