In the Blink of an Eye, the impressive debut from Australia's Houdini Twins, is an interesting affair that handles retro 80s/90s elements with a modern indie/alternative flare. Andy Jarvis and Coo Bennett, former members of Banshees-esque Australian post-punk outfit Toys Went Berserk, shine here with a diverse set that blends inventive alt rock with pop hooks and occasional trip-hop elements. Often seemingly taking its cue from The Pixies with post-punk undertones, its dual male/female vocals ride atop a backing that varies fairly heavily stylistically but showcases the band's strong musical sensibilities.
Of the disc's dozen offerings, the stunning "Hanging on the Telephone" is the standout, blending moodiness with the album's catchiest pop melodies. The more upbeat "Hush" is also noteworthy and quite radio-friendly, while the sinister snaking bass and guitar hooks of "Only Dreaming" give way to another of the album's more memorable choruses. "Something", a dark, plodding outing contradicted by its lilting retro pop chorus, may be the second best here. The opening "The Right Time" and the disc's title track are the other highlights, the former a sultry trip-hop number and the latter's pulsating electronics adding a new wave edge to its reverb drenched guitars and infectious chorus. The other tracks on the album, adding a bit of sonic diversity while, perhaps, cutting into its consistency, range stylistically from the loungy, saloon piano-driven "So Damn Good" to the xylophone-centric "No Plans".
Overall, while slightly spotty, Houdini Twins' debut is an excellent ride that's both memorable and rather unique. Its late 80s/early 90s alt rock stylings will likely appeal to fans of bands like The Pixies and The Breeders, but there are also enough post-punk and trip-hop undertones and overtones to bring fans of moodier, more diverse fare onboard. Come for the catchy singles. Stay for its slightly less accessible but equally satisfying filling.
