Artist: AFI CD Title: Miss Murder Remixed Label: Interscope Records Reviewer: Matthew Johnson Date: 10-8-06 |
As an exclusive DJ promo, Interscope Records has made available several remixes of AFI's hit song, "Miss Murder." VNV Nation's remix of starts out heavy, with aggressive drum machines pounding away, to be eventually joined by Davey Havok's vocals. Then things get a bit weird; there's a progressive bridge part, then the whole thing turns to upbeat synthpop, pretty and perky but not nearly as substantial. It's a bit like the career of VNV Nation, or for that matter AFI themselves, starting off with a primal aggressive power and then gradually getting more and more melodic and accessible. VNV Nation also did an instrumental remix of the song, which is a decent techno track: no more, and no less. The Broken Spindles original and instrumental remixes are more different from each other; although the funky electroclash beats and digital vocal effects on the standard version do little for the song, the instrumental mix is quite good, with the minimalist approach to rhythm letting the guitar edits really spring to life. It's hard to gauge who's really going to be into this, though; there's not a lot of crossover between the VNV Nation and AFI audiences, apart from the fact that they both tend to wear a lot of black. Still, it's an interesting curiosity no matter which camp you belong to.
