| Artist:Ken CD Title:Stop! Look! Sing Songs of Revolution Label: Metropolis Records Reviewer:Richard Edge Date:10-15-06 |
Despite having one of the most ridiculous band names for quite a while, the collective of gentlemen known as Ken (no, none of them are actually named Ken) bring to the table a intriguing blend of indie rock and more old fashioned classic rock experimentalism.
Album opener ‘Black Phantom’ is a brooding, building, psychedelic affair that brings to mind Pink Floyd. The rest of the album builds into a spiky, jerky pop affair, all jangly guitars and a real sense of a British influence.
This is a very contemporary offering, and compares well with the current British crop of Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs et al. What elevates Ken above the generic rabble is the way that their sound eschews the faux humour that seems so beloved of many of the bands around today. Ken instead build on the solid foundations that are their quality songs, adding a sparkle of quality production and a flavour of sixties experimentalism. If there’s any justice in this world they’ll be huge
