Artist: Filter

CD Title: The Amalgamut

Label: Reprise

Review by Julie Johnson

Date: 6/2002

Filter releases 12 powerful rocking tracks on the new album The Amalgamut. The new album rocks, and I feel it is their best and strongest album to date. The songs seem to be more hard edged, and still has a few radio friendly songs such as "Where do we go from here" and "The only way (is the wrong way)". Richard Patrick's vocals are strong, and melodic at the same time. His lyrics are intelligent and straight- forward in the writing. You can feel a ton of emotion on this album right from the beginning track, "You walk Away." This song has this intense energy and catchy feel, and boom it sort of connects right into the next track "American Cliché, which" is an outstanding track with fierce driving guitars and heavy smashing drumming. It is catchy, and definitely one of the best tracks. "The Missing," is one of the slower songs that could be a rock ballad. It has great vocal melody along with the guitar and bass lingering under, and the slower drumming style. "My long walk to Jail", starts off with a telephone sample of a jail. This is a song that some could relate too, saying goodbye, maybe not coming back, and jail being total hell. This song rocks, and is just another fine example to great music on this CD. "So I Quit," is the heaviest song, and the guitars really rumble. It is nice to see the band take the CD to another level. This CD does have programming, and electronics that industrial fans should enjoy, but Filter is not an industrial band, they are a rock band, and that is what they should really be known for. Overall, this is an excellent effort by the band!- Julie Johnson Grave Concerns E-zine
