Fornever, the solo project of Joshua Heinrich, has released an instrumental album soundtrack. Making an instrumental album can be a challenge, as listeners seek lyrics and a human voice in music, but soundtrack shows us how much atmosphere and story can be held in instrumental tracks.
soundtrack is the result of recent recording sessions that will result not only in this record, but also in another album heart paper scissors and the EP numbers. There's a lot to expect from Fornever in the next months!
Describing the musical style of soundtrack is quite a challenge: the tracks meander from electro sounds, wave, ambient, shoegaze to more familiar pop-tunes and instrumental music that is reminiscent of Amelie Poulain.
With 17 tracks on soundtrack, and an incredibly rich palette in sounds and textures on these tracks, the album seemingly tells a biography displaying all human emotions and stages of life.
One of the core strengths of soundtrack is that almost all tracks are very short (2 to 3 minutes in length), which also adds to the fragmentary approach of the album. These fragments don't feel like random parts left in mid-air, but seem to give us snapshots of a life's story – leaving it up to the listener to compose a story behind the music.
My favorite picks from the album are the following tracks: “departure”, with its dark club atmosphere, the atmospheric and dreamy “left behind”, the progressive “silver linings”, the beautiful piano-track “fields”, the trip-hop-influenced “sign cosign” and the dancebeat track “carry on”.
The final three tracks “in darkness”, “the ladder” and “not snow ashes” form the backing soundtrack of Heinrich's short story “The Basement” - and leave me incredibly curious to figure out if the cues I receive from the music are similar to the intentions of the story itself.
A final note on Fornever's album should address the original style. While breakbeats and influences from dubstep are all over the place, soundtrack steers away from all trends and brings us to music in its pure form, stripped naked from all expectations and fashions.
If you have a broad taste in music, and like sitting down with a good record and wondering about the story behind the music, soundtrack is definitely an album you will enjoy.
