As much as I said I loved Halloween (2007) in my last review, I did not like this film overall. Where do I begin? I did not like the portrayal of the Loomis character in this film. In the first film we see Malcolm McDowell do a respectable job of playing Loomis, however, because of the writing, Loomis is now a money hungry unethical sleaze; this was a huge turnoff for me. The original Loomis would never had done this and I think with a franchise such as this, one must stay relatively true to one of its most important protagonists. This brings me to the main antagonist. Since when does Michael Myers take off and put on his mask willy nilly? I hated seeing him rummaging through garbage and walking around so blatantly without his mask. I thought this completely took away from the mystique of the character. It would have been infinitely more cool to have him walking around the fields with the mask on as one of the nurses in the original Halloween II said she saw him doing. Call me old fashioned, but I only see Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. I could overlook this in the first film because it was so excellent, but in this film, it is just another flaw. It also made no sense to have a different child play Michael. So what if Daeg Faerch looks older? He does not look that much older and besides, he had a much better look for the character than Chase Vanek in my opinion. Loss of continuity is a major problem with franchises. On the plus side, the violence and brutality were more graphic in this film and the dream sequences and psychological analysis were interesting (i.e. the excerpt from The Subconscious Psychosis of Dreams) , but the substance and character development were thin and the mystique of Michael Myers was taken away completely in my opinion. Also, in the director’s cut, Michael (adult) speaks by saying Die! Bottom line; Michael Myers does not speak! 2/5
