Movie: Legendary Pink Dots, Live at La Luna
Company: Soleilmoon Records
Format: DVD
Reviewer: Matthew Johnson
Date:

This concert film, shot in Portland, Oregon during the 1997 “Hallway of the Gods” tour, shows the Legendary Pink Dots at their most psychedelic, with ‘70s visuals to match. The video quality is great, though, and the retro moments – things like swirling close-up fades or actual Technicolor pink dots emerging onto the screen during the end credits – are tastefully done and not overused. They actually work quite well with the overall vibe of that particular tour, with the prankster antics of bassist and drummer Ryan Moore and the extended guitar jam on “Love In A Plain Brown Envelope.” This DVD pales in comparison to the incredible atmosphere of an actual Dots show, but as a historical record it’s remarkably truthful. If you didn’t catch the Dots in 1997, this is almost like being there (so buy this, and check www.brainwashed.com/lpd to find out where you can see the Dots this year).
