Capsize- A Perfect Wreck

Synth-pop is a genre that would seem to be nearly as wide in terms of definition as ‘rock’. In the case of Sweden’s Capsize, to refine the descriptor this is synth pop of the dark, lustrous and intelligent type.

Capsize are a duo, formed by Martin and Agnes in 2004, and A Perfect Wreck is the first full length output from their creative partnership. Is has to be said that this is an extremely impressive debut. Agnes has a voice of such beauty and strength, and married to this clever blend of electro pop it is an awesome package.

There are echoes of early Goldfrapp here, before they went disco, and vague memories are stirred of the wonderful voice of Delores from the Cranberries.

The overall mood of the album is one of subtle, hazy relaxation, peppered with the occasional up-beat track, notably strangely-titled opener ‘We are Wimps’, which is a glorious, pumping synth romp replete with dirty bass sounds and trancey synths.

‘Drifting Apart’ is a lush feast of a track, with layered harmonies shifting the mood from minimal to soaring within a moment. \

To be honest, there is not really a weak track to be found here. This is a package that deserves to be heard on a wide scale. Large-scale commercial success is something that is sure to come Capsize’s way if they can continue to produce output of this wonderful quality. This is thoroughly recommended to anyone with a penchant for electro or synth pop of the dark variety.
