Velvet Vimoz- Boy

The debut release from New Jersey electronic artists Velvet Vimoz is disappointing, to say the least. Despite one or two promising moments, the bulk of this six-song EP ranges from passable at best to embarrassing at worst. “Vienna Skye” is decent if unexceptional techno, as is “Moz Trance,” which at least has some promising atmospherics brought up into the mix. The slower “Nine9” aims for airy and ethereal but ends up bland and saccharine, while the amateurish “Girl” and “Kids” – basically different trance mixes using the same loops and samples – come off as a third rate version of Enigma, with the generic Gregorian chanting further marred by a repetitive deep house sample of someone yelling, “Shake hands! What time is it?” By far the worst offering, though, is the techno-pop retro-trash of the title track. With lyrics like “I want to play with toys/I want to be a boy,” it rivals in triteness that “Barbie Girl” song by Aqua. At least they had the excuse of being from Denmark.
