Artist: Elektronika CD Title: Night & Day Label: Self- Released Reviewer:Shaun Phelps Date: 12-21-05 |
Elektronika is the Seattle based project of Dawn Wood (vocals, lyrics), Dan Hoyer (guitar, keys), Jacob Anderson (vocals, guitar, keys), and Joel Njvs (keys). Night and Day is the second full length release of this group. Night and Day is composed of a mixture of new age themes, 80’s synth-pop, and the surprisingly powerful vocals of Anderson accented by the compelling voice of Wood.
True to its name, Night and Day’s opening tracks sound like a mix between Gravity Kills and Collide’s Chasing the Ghost--Heavy and intense, yet chilling and seductive. From here the potential seems limitless and I’m expecting a rollercoaster. After a few tracks the sound mellows into an 80’s pop vibe, however; calming and chill. The intensity of the first few tracks never returns, but Elektronika keeps a strong enough flux in tempo to remain interesting.
There is a lot to be said for Elektronika, songs like “Vampire,” and “Hiding” are absolutely beautiful, sounding like a mixture of Depeche Mode and Battery’s more reflective stages. Elektronika knows how to write a great song, and can manipulate emotions within the span of mere minutes. This is a talented band and an enjoyable listen. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want more from this album, but that in itself is what has motivated me to listen to this Night and Day so many times.
