LA band WASTE brings the noise quotient back to power noise with a full-length debut that runs the gamut from ear-shatteringly harsh to just plain old regular harsh. It’s grating from “Are You My Caucasian?” in the beginning all the way to the damaged but danceable breakbeats of “Martial Device” at the end. WASTE’s layers of beats, feedback, and metallic screeches are interrupted by only the occasional blasts of snare drums and cymbals on “Tear This Bitch Up!” or the hip-hop scratching of “Broken Bass.” There’s almost a hint of melody on “Mantiscrew,” and the band plays a barely recognizable rhythmic noise tribute to the Throbbing Gristle classic “Discipline.” “Irradiated Non Future” features sirens and samples from “Dr. Strangelove” over reverberating beats, while the metallic clunking on “Cold Distorted War” is more classically industrial. Despite the almost astounding level of brutality this band aspires to, it’s all pretty danceable, without any overly fast tracks. Perhaps WASTE felt that the textures and effects were merciless enough without having to rush things by tweaking the BPM rate insanely high. As a bonus, this album features several remixes by Rekahoe, a DJ at legendary LA noise club Das Bunker. Rekahoe’s mix of “Irradiated Non Future” is particularly good, with spacey undertones and a rhythm that hovers anxiously in the background instead of overpowering things. With over seventy minutes of killer noise, this is definitely a promising debut that should appeal to any seekers of entropy, particularly fans of artists like Converter.
