If Pigface founder and legendary drummer Martin Atkins decided to do a movie soundtrack, it might end up sounding like this sophomore release from Earthworm. Interspersed with more conventionally structured industrial rock songs are sample-driven instrumentals, all driven by bass-heavy rhythms and tribal drums. As one half of the band, drummer Mike Varian's contributions are integral to Earthworm's sound, and his playing gives a distinctly live feel even to the more electronic-influenced tracks; on "Flying Sword Technique," he even manages to approximate the frantic rhythms of a drum 'n' bass track. Producer Matt Collins, the other half of Earthworm, adds to the cinematic quality of the music with symphonic keyboards and synthesized string patches on such tracks as the moody but epic "Indigo Wave Generator Number Seven." In addition to the electronics, Collins also plays guitar on several tracks, adding a thick bass line to "1000 Years" in particular, and sings on several tracks. His vocal approach seems very inspired by Skinny Puppy's more recent releases; his voice isn't heavily processed, but an emotionally cold singing style gives it a remoteness on "Fortress" and "Tornado of Souls" just the same.
