ARTIST: Mind Confusion
The latest offering from Quebec's Mind Confusion features a host of remixes from the band's first two albums as well as a couple of covers and new originals. Though all of the new tracks feature guitars in some form or another, this is very much progressive industrial in the vein of early Project Pitchfork, with the emphasis decidedly on melody and atmosphere over head-banging heaviness. Opening track "The Last Stand," one of the band's newest, demonstrates the direction their material is moving in, with epic-sounding guitar chords and growling but mostly clean vocal work. A reworked version of "Unborn" highlights the band's more contemplative side with moody pianos, while the keyboard work on "Faces of Clay" and "Remains" are light enough to verge on synthpop, despite the incongruous thrashing guitars beneath its surface. For more aggressive stuff, remixes of "Mental Ruptures" and "Drawn" offer heavy stomping drum machines and hard-edged power chords, while covers of Plastic Bertrand's "Tout Petit la Planete" and French punk band Berurier Noir's "Lobotomie," both sung in French, offer some of the CD's most distinctive moments. If you're not familiar with Mind Confusion, this seems like a great place to get caught up, especially if you're a fan of the darker, more progressive electronic industrial acts like Decoded Feedback and Project Pitchfork.
