The first CD from Virginia’s Heretics In The Lab is a nonstop blast of brutality that recalls Ministry at their heaviest and throws some pounding percussion on top of that. Tracks like “Heresy” and “Atlas” are mosh pit anthems in the fine tradition of Bile and Fear Factory, with just a touch of violins and keyboards to add that extra hint of spookiness, while the Satanic hymn “Manifesto” adds some orchestral effects and martial cheers in the background for an effect a bit like Laibach, only with more swearing. Surprisingly, though, Heretics In The Lab are at their best when they take on slower material. “The Negative” and “Functionless” are slow but very heavy, sludgy and atmospheric; the Ministry comparisons are still apt, but it’s more “Filthpig” than “Land of Rape and Honey.” “Son Of God” and “Masturbating,” meanwhile, are just straight-up creepy, with minor-key pianos and evilly buzzing synth drones providing a background for drawled whispers that recall Marilyn Manson’s “Antichrist” period. Despite all the comparisons, though, Heretics In The Lab have created a unique enough sound to stand on their own with just one album under their belts, and this release should appeal to anyone with a penchant for dark, gritty industrial metal. They’re currently planning their first national tour, and if their live show is anywhere near as compelling as this CD suggests, they’re bound to build a good-sized fan base in no time.
