Legendary German electronic band Project Pitchfork is back with their first full-length album since 2002, and they’ve continued to push the boundaries. With over an hour of music, this album continues to expand their sound, mixing progressive guitars and a more organic, rock-oriented sense of rhythm with their signature electronics. “The Touch” and “Merry-Go-Round To Hell” are sure to please fans of their earlier material, with classic analog synths bursting into industrial rock choruses full of driving power chords and filled-out vocal production, while “The Future Is Now” has enough distorted guitars and vocals to be mistaken for KMFDM in one of their less aggressive moments. The German-language “Schall and Rauch” introduces a more contemporary EBM feel with mid-tempo, trance-inspired arpeggios, while “Fleischverstaker” is simultaneously cold and upbeat. The lyrics, as always, are philosophical and abstract, from the introspection of “Abyss” to the outright bizarre dragon metaphors of “Beautiful-Logic-Strings.” Much like the band’s last two or three albums, this album will probably alienate a portion of Project Pitchfork’s audience, but this material is interesting enough to bring in new fans as well.
